Is the Surface Salinity Difference between the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific a Signature of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation?

چکیده
Abstract The high Atlantic surface salinity has sometimes been interpreted as a signature of the meridional overturning circulation and an associated salt advection feedback. Here, role oceanic atmospheric processes for creating difference between Indo-Pacific is examined using observations conceptual model. In each basin, zonally averaged data are represented in diagrams relating net evaporation S . data-pair curves – plane share common features both basins. However, slopes generally smaller than Indo-Pacific, indicating weaker sensitivity to variations. To interpret these observations, advective–diffusive model upper-ocean constructed. Notably, relations can be qualitatively reproduced with only diffusive transport. this limit, interbasin caused by spatial structure evaporation, which oceans contains lower wavenumbers that weakly damped observed relationship at reveals no clear influence northward circulation; however, emerges when vertically over upper kilometer. results indicate zonal-mean near-surface shaped primarily pattern transport due wind-driven gyres mesoscale ocean eddies, rather within circulation.

Atlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...

Introduction: the concept of the MOC Climate models project a slow down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in the twenty-first century. This slow down is expected to affect climate over Europe. In particular, it damps the temperature rise due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The MOC is associated with the thermohaline circulation (ThC), which is the large-scale ocean c...

[1] Satellite altimeter data shows a weakening of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre during the 1990s, which is thought as an indicator of a slowdown of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). However, whether the recent slowing subpolar gyre is a decadal variation or a long-term trend remains unclear. Here I show that altimeter data is highly correlated with instrumental subsurfa...
متن کاملOn the Driving Processes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
[1] Because of its relevance for the global climate the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has been a major research focus for many years. Yet the question of which physical mechanisms ultimately drive the AMOC, in the sense of providing its energy supply, remains a matter of controversy. Here we review both observational data and model results concerning the two main candidates...
متن کاملOn the stability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation.
One of the most important large-scale ocean current systems for Earth's climate is the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Here we review its stability properties and present new model simulations to study the AMOC's hysteresis response to freshwater perturbations. We employ seven different versions of an Ocean General Circulation Model by using a highly accurate tracer advectio...
